Student Leadership Philosophy
History and Development
Fall 2017 - Summer 2019
Beginning in the fall of 2017, Student Involvement, Leadership, and Transitions sought to develop a framework or philosophy that would ground the leadership education programs and services offered across campus. Over the next two years faculty and staff engaged in researching student leadership on Emory’s campus and determining the best grounding principles to guide our work. The philosophy was finalized in the summer of 2019 and implementation and use of the philosophy began in earnest in the fall of 2019.
The development of the current philosophy was a collaborative effort between multiple departments and units across campus in addition to student input. Please see the list below for specific departmental engagement. The creation of the philosophy occurred after:
- hosting over 20 focus groups with students and staff to understand the climate around student leadership,
- diving into leadership literature to inform our philosophy,
- and convening a task force to ultimately decide on the principles and tenets of our philosophy.
